Ive been meaning to do some more fan art and I finally got the chance. Dig dugs such a great game. Its one of those classics that still holds strong. I've been animating a ton lately. Around Liberal studies coarse :( and I figured maybe someone would like to see the work I'm doing lately.

here's where this character started out. This is the original concept drawing I did for him.

Then I scanned it into the computer and Pushed it until I had a character I was really happy with. I presented him to the class and they loved him!

Then I story boarded the entire story out from first pass to the final anamatic with sound and all. and then I can exported each of the scenes from the anamatic so the animators can refer to them as they complete the scenes.

This is the part of the story board that I got to work from:

So I had to extract the audio track and start animation my scene. And believe me, before the time I was through I never wanted hear the sound of a chattering squirrel again!
I started out by making a character rig of the two characters in the scene and the background, then I began to animate the leader gnomes movements in after effects. I blocked out the basic movements that I wanted, did the lip syncs, and basically did all the easy stuff. But I was completely stumped on how I was going to get After effects to animate a rearing squirrel. The only way I could think of doing it was to draw out a few key poses and time re-map them all, but that didn't sound like much fun. Its such a far stretch from traditionally animating that I was kind of reluctant to even try. So I began to search for other ways of getting the result I wanted. I wanted the ability to fully animate something but have it be able to match the same look as my after effects project had. I didn't know at first how I was going to do it but I just wanted to do it and the only way I knew how to flesh something out really quick was in Flash. So I loaded it up, imported the audio, and began to animate the scene.
Here was my first pass:

Then I began to add more and more structure to my drawings and try and bring them back on model. At this point I was focused on just the main body parts and hadn't messed with any overlapping actions yet.

On this third export I just wanted to make sure everything I was doing wasn't in vein, so I exported the video from flash with an alpha channel and imported it into After effects to see how well the flash project would look inside the After effects composition. I was pleasantly surprised!

So after I was confident that I wasn't wasting my time, I continued to clean up the rest of the animation and put the finishing touches on the flash project.

Then I moved the flash portion of the scene into the main AE comp, placed it where it needed to be, made the camera movements that the anamatic called for, and finished it off!
And here's the finished product:

Man was this a ton of work! My first fully animated scene I can proudly put into my demo reel. It feels great to finally have something I'm proud to show.
